From autumn to winter, with the temperature falling, the cork layer is formed in the portion of the base from the petiole of the leaf. This prevents from flowing the water and nutrients. Therefore, the sugar made by photosynthesis is stored in the leaves, and it helps producing anthocyanin which makes leaves red. On the other hand, the chlorophyll, which is colored green, just keeps being decomposed. This process makes a variety of autumn leaf colors.
